Why in the world would anyone waste a totally good red wine by mixing it with fruits, brandy and club soda? Sacrilege, isn’t it? But that’s missing the point if you’re talking about making sangria.Make sangria by taking a so-so red wine and boosting it with fruity flavors to make you forget that you made a hell of a mistake buying wine you wouldn’t care to drink by itself in the first place. And, in my case, boosting goes a step farther. Instead of topping sangria with club soda, I use sparkling juice instead.
- ¼ apple
- ¼ orange
- ¼ lemon
- 1 tablespoon simple syrup (see notes after the recipe)
- 2 tablespoons brandy
- 1 cup dry red wine
- sparkling juice
- Cut the apple, orange and lemon into thin wedges (or slices). Discard the seeds.
- Place the apple, orange and lemon wedges in a jar with a screw-type lid.
- Pour in the simple syrup, brandy and red wine. Make sure that there is space in the jar for the sparkling juice that you will add later. Stir gently.
- Screw on the cap of the jar and keep the jar in the fridge overnight. Twenty-four hours will yield even better results.
- Unscrew the jar cap and pour in enough sparkling juice to fill it up.
- Stir gently and enjoy your delicious sangria with sparkling juice.

To make simple syrup, boil equal amounts of water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Cool before using. Sparkling juice is non-alcoholic and it comes in many flavors. I used raspberry for this recipe.
